Immense glaciers, snow-capped mountains, rushing rivers, mirrored lakes, vibrant flowers—all are a small part of the truly fantastic beauty of this state. It is so immense, with so many different mountain ranges, it is hard to imagine. Much of it is still pristine. How long this will last is questionable. For instance, the glaciers are fast disappearing. Matanuska glacier, north of Anchorage, in the mid- 1990’s was a short few hundred feet walk from a parking lot is now nearly a mile away and still receding. Portage Glacier, south of Anchorage, calved into Portage Lake with tremendous explosions of water in the mid-1990’s, but now is far back from the lake and the visitor’s center built for people to watch it calve.
